Hello!

I wanted to send in a little update about me! I was in the Women's Leadership Initiative program during my senior year of high school.

"I was in the Women's Leadership Initiative program during my senior year of high school. I recently graduated from SWIC's nursing program and passed my NCLEX! I will be starting a new RN position in the ER at St. Mary's Hospital this month. I transferred to SIUE this past Spring, where I am taking courses to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Senator Terri Bryant mentored me during my time as a WLI mentee. She was there for me with any questions I had. She was also willing to give any advice as a new high school graduate going forward with my college education. I enjoy this program very much and have made lasting relationships along the way!"

“My experience with the Women's Leadership Initiative group was truly transformative. As a first-generation Latina college student majoring in political science and communication, it is difficult to find someone to rely on for helpful guidance. However, joining this group provided me with a supportive community of like-minded women who shared my passion for leadership. Through the Women's Leadership Initiative, I’ve been able to have discussions and networking events featuring influential women in politics and in different fields. These experiences not only expanded my knowledge but also boosted my confidence as I was assigned a mentor who is successful in her field and is wise. Initially, I was concerned about whether our different backgrounds would be a barrier, but I quickly realized that our differences were a source of strength rather than a barrier. My mentor not only provided guidance in navigating the academic and professional aspects of my chosen field but also helped me gain knowledge in other aspects of life whereas a first gen, nobody tells you about. If I ever needed guidance in a decision academically or personally my mentor was the indicated person that was able to help me. In the end, my mentor was not only someone I look up to but also a cherished friend. Proving that the beauty of mentorship lies in the ability to bridge differences and build lasting connections. Being part of this group not only enriched my academic journey but also empowered me to embrace my identity and pursue my goals. I am grateful for the support and inspiration I found in my mentor and within the Women's Leadership Initiative.”

”As a Mentee, I felt that my Mentor, Pam, was able to encourage me in every big idea that I brought to her, as well as help me make a plan to accomplish my goals. After we met each week, I felt a sense of calm and confidence knowing that I had someone to cheer me on as I pushed to accomplish my goals. Networking and interviewing those already in my chosen field, allowed me to feel more secure in my plan to be a psychologist. Pam lived up to her title as a "mentor." Meeting with another strong, open-minded woman each week is exactly what every college-bound student needs. The most important thing I got out of the program was a new sense of confidence in my ability to achieve my goals, as well as the resources to push forward.

Here is my Murray update!

I have recently become a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha (the oldest sorority on Murray State's campus). That has filled up much of my time, but has become something I am extremely grateful for during this season of life. I have joined the recruitment committee, which has allowed me to feel a sense of leadership that I missed when moving to Murray.

I have also joined the Sociology Club to provide me with the necessary support for my major. I have an appointment scheduled this week to become an orientation leader this coming summer, as well as work as a member of the CHA faculty.

“The women's leadership initiative program helps pave a pathway for young women to interact with informed people in our area. My mentor was Dainelle Powell. She helped me make my road to college more straightforward and beneficial. We narrowed my college options down to 5 colleges. She guided me to research my major and find colleges that matched my wants and needs. I talked to two different forensics scientists, one in ballistics and one in lab samples. They answered many of my questions, gave me insight into the lab, and guided me to my college major. I am currently enrolled at Maryville University, majoring in Forensic Psychology. The program also allowed me to intern with Cathy Dupertuis and David Friess in his office. I gained valuable information while interning; attending events allowed me to talk with elected officials and further my network. This was a fantastic program to complete. If I had had time to convene with all their meetings, I would have taken the opportunity to do another session. All young women should take the time to consider this program. It has helped my venture tremendously.

The Women’s Leadership Initiative program is a great program for anybody. It helped me explore more options in career fields and gave me many opportunities that I wouldn’t have even thought possible. It’s a great program for any young woman looking for someone to talk to about their future or even just general conversations.

The single most important thing I gained from this program was finding that there is hope in younger generations to take charge, be progressive, set goals, and work hard. Emma is a great example of all of these. Regardless of our age, we are always learning, and the right mindset is everything.

I was very satisfied with the success of the program, I enjoyed the interaction and communication with a high school student and gained awareness of the issues current high school students are dealing with. I gained a relationship with a new young adult.
